WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT (WIA) PROGRAM
 
AICI is a U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration Native American Programs Division Section 166 grantee working cooperatively throughout the state of Indiana within the DWD/Work One system
 
The designated service area of AICI's WIA program includes all of the counties in Indiana, except for the following six counties: Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph Counties. (These six counties are located within the designated service area of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians and its WIA program, based in Dowagiac, Michigan. Criteria to be eligible to participate in AICI's WIA program include:
  • American Indian, Alaska Native or Hawaiian Native,
  • 18 years of age or older and out of high school,
  • Male applicants 18 or older must register for the Selective Service,
  • U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen,
  • Unemployed, or
  • Underemployed, or
  • A low-income individual, or
  • An individual who is a recipient of a bona-fide layoff notice which has taken effect in the last six months or will take effect in the following six month period, and who is unlikely to return to a previous industry or occupation, and who is in need of retraining for either employment with another employer or job retention with the current employer, or
  • An individual who is employed, but is determined by AICI to be in need of employment and training services to maintain self-sufficiency.
Appointments preferred; walk-ins will be serviced as staff availability allows, or will be given an opportunity to make an appointment for a future date.
 
Services Provided Include:
 
Core Services: Outreach, intake, eligibility certification, job search and placement assistance, and referral to OneStop/WorkOne service providers as warranted.
 
Intensive Services: Comprehensive assessment, career counseling and planning, training and education counseling and planning, individual service planning, work experience/on-the-job training, and supportive services.
 
*Services provided include those who are handicapped or with special needs. All services are free to employers and participants.
 
CIRCLE OF WELLNESS PROGRAM
 
Through its Circle of Wellness Program, AICI provides health education, screenings, and referral services to American Indians/Alaska Natives in Indiana; also, AICI offers health-related cultural competency workshops to non-Indian health care providers in Indiana who service American Indian/Alaska Native clients.
 
CULTURAL COMPETENCY
 
Beyond its WIA and Circle of Wellness programs, AICI also facilitates broader educational activities that increase the public's awareness of Indiana's American Indian culture and communities, especially in a manner that stimulates critical thinking about accurate and reliable portrayals of American Indians.  The purpose of these activities is to dispel negative or uninformed stereotypes. Such activities include Indian arts, crafts, and storytelling workshops in various venues across Indiana; venues may include schools, colleges, libraries, and powwows, among other places.
